My god, the image of a loving, devoted man that was so carefully marketed has barely lasted two days before being shattered so abruptly.

His wife is truly unfortunate, marrying such a man. And “devoted”? He has no shame, ruining someone’s life and then loudly proclaiming he was forced, utterly shameless. All men like him should crawl!

His son is no better, keeping young models and idols around for years. Wasn’t there gossip about the young master of the Zhou family’s romantic escapades? They were talking about Zhou Kuan’s son, not Zhou Lichuan, who got caught in the crossfire.

Better than a living idealized lover is a dead one. If he really cared, why did he have a child with someone else? Clearly, he lacked the ability to protect the one he loved, yet insists others forced him. Absolutely disgusting.

Wow, the ones suffering most in this whole mess must be Madam Zhou and the eldest daughter in Australia… so pitiful…

Jiang Zao glanced at Zhou Jiayan, who treated the juice as if it were wine, tossing back the whole glass in one gulp.

…Perhaps she’s never been loved by her father, but she’s certainly never been pitiable.

No sooner had the tension eased than Zhou Lichuan’s car pulled up in the old mansion’s parking space.

The house staff came to report that the young master had returned, and Shen Xiaonan hurried to go downstairs and greet her son.

Soon, her joyful voice floated up from the first floor: “It’s wonderful that you’ve recovered so well. My heart can finally be at ease.”

Zhou Lichuan sounded indifferent: “Mom, I’m fully recovered. The doctors all say I’m doing well, you don’t need to worry.”

Shen Xiaonan nodded, “Yes, your health is the most important thing. Are you here to see Zaozao? Or would you like to see your father first and say a few words? He’s been worried about you for a long time.”

Zhou Lichuan probably shook his head, “Mom, I need to talk to Miss Jiang. When we’re done, you and Dad should find a time to send her away. She’s been lingering at the old mansion too long.”

Shen Xiaonan was momentarily stunned, and by the time she recovered, Zhou Lichuan had already gone upstairs, with his shadow-like bodyguard, Du Bin, following closely behind.

She wanted to stop him, but… this wasn’t a problem that could be solved by stopping him today.

Shen Xiaonan sighed and instructed the nearby staff, “Go get the family doctor, have them ready at any moment.”

Of course, Zhou Jiayan had heard what Zhou Lichuan said downstairs. She stood in the doorway of the drawing room, arms crossed, like a gatekeeper.

Just like Du Bin had blocked her outside the villa in Tingshan.

“Why are you here?” Zhou Lichuan frowned, questioning Zhou Jiayan.

Zhou Jiayan glanced aside, ignoring him.

Zhou Lichuan stepped forward, “Move aside, I need to speak with Jiang Zao.”

Zhou Jiayan remained unmoved at the doorway. “Jiang Zao hasn’t been well for days. I’ve been here so long and haven’t seen you call to check on her. If you go in and upset her, who am I supposed to turn to?”

As she spoke, she glared several times at Du Bin behind Zhou Lichuan.

Du Bin felt uneasy under her glare; but what could he do… Zhou Lichuan was his boss…

“Yan Yan, let your brother in,” Jiang Zao called, already walking to the doorway to persuade Zhou Jiayan.

Zhou Jiayan shot her a disappointed look, “Why are you so useless, letting people bully you like this!”

Jiang Zao smiled and patted her arm, “I feel like eating some tangerines. Would you get me a few, please?”

Zhou Jiayan had always disliked citrus fruits, never touching pomelos or lemons. Jiang Zao had never asked her to fetch tangerines before. She knew Jiang Zao wanted her out of the way. She glanced at Zhou Lichuan’s stern face, and though she was uneasy, she went.

Seeing the little tyrant obediently head upstairs to her room, Zhou Lichuan was somewhat surprised, “Zhou Jiayan actually listens to you.”

Jiang Zao said nothing, glanced at Du Bin, and he immediately took the hint, lowered his head, and also went upstairs, keeping out of the way.

Zhou Lichuan watched Du Bin ascend, his gaze deep and inscrutable.

Jiang Zao sat back on the sofa, her phone set aside. “What does Mr. Zhou want to say?”

Zhou Lichuan’s eyes shifted from the stairwell where Du Bin disappeared, settling on Jiang Zao’s face. “Meng Qiaoyuan, Shen Mushi, my parents, Zhou Jiayan, Du Bin, Gao Chenggong. You know quite a few people.”

“Is Mr. Zhou wary of me?”

He sneered, sitting opposite her and leaning lightly against the sofa, his gaze arrogant. “You’re quite resourceful, whether with my family or with public opinion online.”

Jiang Zao’s posture was deferential, but her presence bristled with thorns. “Shouldn’t you thank me? I helped you resolve quite a significant problem.”

“How did you persuade Zhou Jiayan and her mother to make this past public?”

Jiang Zao shook her head, “I didn’t persuade them. I simply laid out the reality. They chose to reveal family secrets to the media themselves. After all, if they didn’t speak out, others would eventually dig it up anyway. Better to take control now.”

“And Gao Chenggong? He’s part of the corporation.”

Jiang Zao smiled slightly, “Everything I did was for the corporation, wasn’t it? President Gao couldn’t make decisions alone, and the chairman is keeping watch at home. Besides, my dealings with President Gao are personal, nothing to do with Mr. Zhou.”

Zhou Lichuan replied insincerely, “Then I must thank you for thinking of me.”

Jiang Zao ignored him, lowering her head to rub her fingers.

She had never seen Zhou Lichuan like this—cold, forceful, lofty. He was always polite to outsiders, but never this detached or cold-hearted. With her, he had always been smiling, gentle, indulgent. He worried she’d be cold, that she’d be in pain. He felt sorry she couldn’t go out, always considering everything for her.

Now he sat there, his unfamiliar, distant attitude like a blade of ice, slicing her to pieces.

Unable to bear it, Jiang Zao looked up at him.

He was staring back, with none of the familiar tenderness or affection in his gaze, only disgust and wariness.

A tear slipped down Jiang Zao’s cheek; she lowered her head to wipe it away.

Zhou Lichuan spoke, “I know you like me very much. Maybe I loved you too. But I don’t remember. Everything at home feels familiar, yet strange. Every time I get close, I feel… blocked inside.”

“This isn’t the emotion I’m supposed to have. So, Miss Jiang, I need you to leave.”

Jiang Zao didn’t understand, “Leave?”

Zhou Lichuan nodded, “You can mobilize Gao Chenggong, persuade Zhou Jiayan and her mother to expose private matters, dismiss Du Bin with a single glance. Not to mention Shen Mushi, who threatened to break with me for your sake, and Dr. Meng who treats me like an enemy. Someone like you, I must be cautious with. Please leave. I’ll give you a sum of money. You can live anywhere you wish, as long as it’s not Jingzhou. Everything else is negotiable.”

Jiang Zao, tears falling, asked, “Very well. How much does Mr. Zhou intend to give me?”

“One million. Plus a home in the city you choose.”

Jiang Zao’s mind buzzed, a string snapping instantly in her head, “You said… how much?”

“One million. A house.”
