Chapter Ninety: The World Rebooted

I Can Summon Paratroopers A slightly rounded belly 2471 words 2026-04-11 17:35:25

The damned scholar—so that idiot was taken out by the other side. Our mission was wasted for nothing after all... wait, we are not back on the mysterious train?

With the battle going badly, Wolf Fang Potato had withdrawn at once. On the way out, he had even made a special detour through the underground labyrinth and crushed the unconscious William Cage to death.

They had thought the mission was complete and that the two of them would return directly.

Who would have guessed that, in a flash of white light, they would become recruits once more and appear inside the barracks?

On the first day of recruitment, the instructor was still that long-faced brute, dark-skinned, thick-bodied, looking like an underdeveloped chimpanzee.

While Potato was grumbling, the chimpanzee instructor was still spouting battlefield reports in a spray of spit. Most of the recruits were whispering to one another, and it did not draw the instructor’s attention.

Potato was clearly a beat slow. He still thought he had returned to the carriage, his whole body completely relaxed, and his mouth had fallen into its usual complaints.

Wolf Fang, however, was naturally vigilant and immediately sensed that something was wrong.

“Bad news, time has been rewound. We’re back at the beginning again!”

Potato was on the verge of collapse. His eyes bulged, and disbelief was written all over his face. “The timeline had clearly been losing money for months, and France still hadn’t fallen completely.

William hadn’t even been to the front lines. He could not possibly have been contaminated by the blood of monsters and gained the power to be reborn. What in the world is going on?”

In his agitation, Potato’s voice inevitably rose, and in an instant he drew the chimpanzee instructor’s attention.

The man strode over in long steps, staring at Potato through his nostrils, his solid pectorals quivering.

“Do you have a problem?”

Potato swallowed, doing his best to shrink away. “N-no!”

“Then listen properly when the instructor is speaking. Recruit, this is not your home. In the army, the officer is supreme. You must obey every order from your superior unconditionally. Do you understand?!”

“Yes, sir!” Potato snapped to attention.

“Didn’t you eat? Louder!”

“Sorry, sir! Yes, sir!”

Potato nearly shouted the words. Only then did the chimpanzee instructor nod in satisfaction.

Feeling that his dignity had been upheld, he cast a look of disdain over the recruits and barked, “You have two hours to handle chores and familiarize yourselves with the surroundings. Two hours later, we begin the first recruit training. No lateness. Dismissed!”

After the chimpanzee instructor left, Potato let out a long breath. His legs had gone soft like noodles, and he nearly collapsed to the ground.

He stuck out his tongue, looking miserable. “Damn it, can’t that chimp at least wash himself? That sour, rotten stench all over him—like spoiled cabbage wrapped in an old woman’s footcloth for three months, then tossed into a pan of frying stinky tofu and left to fry all night.

If he had come one step closer, I would have been unable to stop myself from killing him!”

Wolf Fang’s expression did not change. “Who told you to act out every time and talk so loudly? Of course they’d use you as the one to draw fire!

Enough nonsense. Get ready; we need to finish this as quickly as possible. And by the way, bad news: William Cage is alive again. Our mission is not complete!”

Potato stared wide-eyed, and after a long moment squeezed out a curse through clenched teeth.

This situation was truly terrible.

They had thought victory was already in hand, intending to steal a chicken, only to find that not only had they failed to steal it, they had also lost one of their own to the chicken instead.

And to make matters worse, the mission that had already been completed had been erased by time rewinding.

This was absurd to the point of hilarity.

During free movement in the recruit camp, Wolf Fang and Potato slipped out of the barracks amid the chaos and followed the route they had previously discussed back to the city center.

But this time, their target was no longer William Cage.

It was the heroine.

“This woman is not easy to deal with! She’s been through countless battles, her close-quarters combat is off the charts, and she never leaves her exoskeleton armor. She’s going to be hard to handle!”

Driving the stolen car, Potato never stopped talking, muttering one sentence after another. Wolf Fang sat in the passenger seat with his arms folded, eyes closed, resting.

“Boss, are you even listening to me?”

“What good would it do if I did? The ability to reset time has to be eliminated. If we don’t kill this woman, our mission will never be finished. Every time William Cage is killed, after a while the world will reset.

If we get trapped in this endless loop, the two of us may as well not leave at all!” Wolf Fang said calmly.

Potato said, “But shouldn’t we be going after the people on the other side? They’re the ones who took out the scholar! We’re already in the negative!”

“That can’t be helped. Both our abilities are geared toward battlefield tactics.

Your earth-burrowing technique can only be used in advance to set traps or dig trenches. It can’t even sustain long-distance movement underground, let alone create earth clones.

My werewolf virus can indeed transform any living creature into a werewolf, but the werewolf units it creates belong to chaotic and unruly factions. They do not obey my commands; instead, they instinctively slaughter every living thing around them.

In a situation like last night, that was fine. Under the cover of my aura, the werewolves could not sense your life signatures at all. They assumed that I alone was a fellow kind in that direction, so of course they would not attack.

That is why every werewolf last night charged madly toward the other side.

But if the werewolf virus were to spread in the city, the consequences would be unimaginable!

The most likely outcome would be a massive divergence in the world line, followed by another reset!”

Hearing the words “another reset,” Potato could not help but change color.

“But what if the heroine is not the one who gains the ability? The army in this world has been fighting the aliens for five years. It’s impossible that only two have appeared. Maybe one appeared earlier, just with a different temperament.

That person might well have used the time-reset trait to escape the fate of the front lines and return to the rear, to seize greater benefits for himself.”

Wolf Fang said calmly, “In any case, we have to try first. Let’s locate the heroine. Once you’re ready, activate the Earth Core directly and trap the training ground, along with the target, beneath the earth!

Use a subtle method if possible. Best of all, knock her unconscious and make her bleed!”

Potato let out a long breath, his gaze firm. “Understood!”

The car suddenly accelerated, leaving a trail of black smoke as it entered the city of Versailles.

Like Wolf Fang’s team, Gao Ning was also somewhat stunned by the sudden reset of the world.

Too sudden.

No warning, no preparation, no hesitation—you just showed up like that, Scarface Instructor!

Standing among the recruits and watching the scar-faced instructor pose with his hands behind his back, Gao Ning listened as the man launched into another lengthy speech before once again asking whether anyone wanted to quit.

Last time, Gao Ning had raised his hand without hesitation and been beaten half to death, both openly and covertly, by the instructor.

This time, after some thought, he decisively chose to stay.

That’s right. This was the front line against monsters. With a weapon as powerful as the gene mutation device in hand, why would he not rapidly build strength among the monster ranks? Was he supposed to run all the way to Luxembourg again?

Stay low. Get out of the camp first, then talk.
