Chapter 84: The Terrifying Robot?

Swish!
All eyes instantly fixed on him—new recruits in his own squad, instructors, even soldiers passing by from other companies.
Those gazes were sharp as blades, stabbing relentlessly at Gao Ning.
He shuddered; so this was what it felt like to be the target of a thousand accusing fingers. It was, indeed, terrifying.
The veteran’s eyes were piercing, simmering with rage he could barely contain. Gao Ning felt as if a cold, merciless aura was emanating from behind the man, ready to engulf him at any moment.
After a few seconds of silence, the veteran repeated in a chilling voice, “Very well. You’re a coward who knows his limitations. Cowards will never stand with men. I’m glad you’re leaving early; at least you won’t drag us down on the battlefield!”
“Anyone else? Anyone else want to quit?”
The squad was silent as the grave. Gao Ning still had his hand raised, a bit nervous, but his mind wandered elsewhere.
He hadn’t really heard the veteran’s speech, only catching the last sentence. His hand shot up almost by reflex. Now, having processed what happened, Gao Ning’s expression twisted oddly.
This place was Edge of Tomorrow?
What was he doing in a sci-fi movie world again? That’s three in a row.
On the Red Alert interface, a new mission appeared.
[Mission One: Assess the environment; reach a safe area.]
Same old routine, though who knew what work awaited this time.
Right—after the last world, after submitting the Euphoria Space, he unlocked a second reaction template. This time, his hearing should double.
Wait!
There was still a neutral unit he hadn’t chosen.
But that was limited to animals—not so easy to find.
Should he really try for a hunting dog or a wolf?
He’d considered lions, tigers, and bears, but dismissed them outright.
Those animals are powerful but don’t cooperate well. Their combat zones are limited; most times, even a police dog is more useful.
Wolf packs were tempting. In open grasslands, releasing the neutral unit could build a pack within a month, creating formidable fighting strength.
Gao Ning hesitated, deciding to wait and see.
The neutral template was hard to acquire; he’d had to hand over the whole Euphoria Space just to get one.
Better to keep it for now. If he enters a Warcraft world later, getting an elf hunter or wolf rider would be ideal!
The veteran was clearly displeased with Gao Ning’s interruption.

His tough speech was meant to forge the recruits into the image of a soldier.
An army should be iron-blooded, ruthless, and strictly disciplined. Even when facing death, as long as the enemy was before them, they should charge forward without hesitation.
But Gao Ning’s raised hand turned that pressure into a multiple-choice question.
The recruits kept their composure outwardly, but who knew what thoughts now stirred beneath.
“You! Step forward!”
The veteran pointed at Gao Ning.
A young soldier nearby hurried to say, “Gao Ning, from Brooklyn, New York, graduated high school, no criminal record, volunteered for service…”
The veteran sneered, “Oh, so he thought himself a man before. Too bad he’s not.”
Gao Ning pondered which direction led to the rear lines—should he head there and lay low for a while?
“No one else wants to quit? Good. Seems most of you are men!
This is a war between humanity and alien monsters. We will never allow our home to be taken by monsters!
Cowards have no right to fight alongside men! Everyone, follow me!”
The veteran turned and marched off, recruits trailing in a rush behind him.
The young soldier came over, looked Gao Ning up and down with a strange expression, shook his head, and handed him a slip. “I don’t know why you changed your mind so suddenly, but buddy, trust me—this isn’t a good idea!”
With that, he walked away.
Gao Ning shrugged indifferently, took the slip, and left the barracks.
They’d all been brought by army trucks, so they had few personal belongings.
Not that Gao Ning cared.
He walked nearly a kilometer before finding a bus stop. Whether the buses were running or not, he sat down on the bench.
A cold mechanical voice sounded in his ear.
“Passenger zsnr24956 has arrived at the station.”
“Mission: Protect William Cage.”
“Reward: 20 hours!”
Gao Ning was taken aback—protect him?
His expression quickly changed.
This was a confrontation mission!
The opposing group’s mission must be to kill him.
But in this world, the protagonist has the ability to reset. There are only two chances to kill him.
Page (3/3)
First: before he gains his cheat.
Second: after the war is won and he loses it.
The timing of the first is hard to pin down. The war is ongoing, and every day more suicide squads are sent to the front.
Usually, entering the mission happens before the plot begins, but in this unique world, no one can guarantee whether the protagonist has already gained the reset ability.
If exposed, it could only alert the enemy.
So the opposing group would likely wait and watch, then strike after the war is won and the protagonist loses his cheat.
Gao Ning pondered; now was not the time to interfere on the battlefield.
Without sufficient forces built up, it was too risky to act rashly.
This mission was different from previous ones.
The battlefield was a meat grinder for two armies.
Though Gao Ning had completed two missions, he was still an ordinary man—at best, a bit more muscular.
He had yet to face military strength head-on, so waiting and adapting was the wisest course.
The enemy might not wait, though. If another powered enemy appeared, the protagonist’s fate could truly be uncertain.
But following the usual camp selection logic, since his side was with humanity, the enemy must be with the monsters.
Lost in thought, he didn’t know how long he waited before a bus slowly pulled up.
It was still running!
Gao Ning boarded, glanced around, and found no coin slot or card reader. He simply took the seat behind the driver.
The driver made no move to ask for fare.
It seemed this route was a welfare line for staff, or perhaps in this world, public transport was now free.
Whatever the case, Gao Ning was sure—he was in a safe zone again!
As expected, the Red Alert interface shifted.
