Chapter 109: Attraction
The sudden appearance of the flag caught several eyes at once. First was the female ghost, Ninth Sister; then the resurrected Max; and finally Liang Bing, hidden atop a platform. Max, focused solely on killing, after his resurrection, continued moving toward his mortal enemy—the heroine of the story, the girl’s grandmother’s house. Along the way, he eliminated everyone he encountered without any attempt at subtlety, boldly and openly.
Under the Halloween atmosphere, blood and the macabre were the themes. Half of the police had already been taken down, and the rest wandered aimlessly like headless flies. Even with a large contingent of assistants, none could stop Max’s killing spree. This was his night of slaughter.
Ninth Sister stared at the flag for a moment before dismissing it from her mind. She had no intention of investigating further, even though she knew the flag’s sudden appearance was strange, possibly a trick from the opposing team. But having lost the Water and Fire Dragon Pearl—a precious artifact worth 200 units—she was keen on making up for the loss by repeatedly hunting Max.
After leveling up, besides her attacks, her ghostly form could now briefly touch physical objects. Still unable to control the natural icy chill that radiated from her, she hugged a steamed bun, and within less than 50 meters, it was frozen solid into an ice stick, unaware it had met its demise.
The bun, after being reborn, looked at her at a forty-five-degree angle, utterly speechless, but there was no solution. She could only summon Ninth Sister again with a spell, and the two resumed their old method of movement—running on short legs!
Though Ninth Sister’s help allowed them to lock onto Max’s position in a straight line, their legs were too short, and they were still on the way, unable to catch up with the slow-moving Max.
Liang Bing was stunned when she saw the flag, unable to react for the first few minutes. Much suspicion swirled around Halloween, Max, and the rival teams. After the last sneak attack, she was still a little shaken. Although she appeared calm on the surface, she could not deceive herself regarding her inner turmoil.
So, for a while, Liang Bing did not take action. But as she gradually calmed and repeatedly replayed the scene in her mind, she finally realized something.
After a moment’s hesitation, she bit her lip and bravely stepped outside. Moving stealthily through streets and alleys, already cloaked by the night, and aided by her special abilities, she moved without a sound. After more than ten minutes, she finally reached her destination.
She stopped abruptly, stunned by the familiar and enormous building before her. It was a Red Alert power plant! Red Alert? Gao Ning! She immediately thought of something, a faint excitement stirring within her, and hurried toward the power plant.
The sudden appearance of the power plant attracted quite a crowd. On Halloween night, children went around with baskets asking for candy, while adults celebrated in bars or at home. But this strange sight drew many out of their homes to watch.
The flag had appeared afterward, and since the building was relatively simple, most people only glanced at it briefly. Instead, their curious gazes centered on the electromagnetic power orb in the middle of the power plant. The visible lightning was not something one could see every day.
Children tried to reach out to touch it, as if watching a science experiment. Adults, of course, forbade any dangerous actions and instead called the police to report the anomaly.
But the police were busy chasing Max, with no time for such trivial matters. The call center only recorded the report and hung up. Half an hour had passed, and no police car had appeared. Though some spectators grumbled, most were unbothered. After confirming the power plant posed no threat, their curiosity grew. Several even eagerly tried to climb a ladder to see what was on top.
Liang Bing quickly blended into the crowd, pulling up her hood to conceal her face. She moved through the throng silently, observing the power plant without drawing attention.
Soon, her gaze settled on the nearby flagpole.
A flagpole? This building felt oddly familiar—could it be...?
A flash of insight crossed Liang Bing’s mind. She chose a man nearby who was recording a video on his phone and calmly approached him. With a casual smile, she wiped the phone’s round mirror and tapped the man on the shoulder, feigning familiarity.
“Hey, buddy, not going for drinks? What are you doing here? Filming videos for your friends again? Tonight’s Halloween—put the phone away and let’s celebrate!”
The man turned, puzzled. In a flash, Liang Bing covered his mouth and nose with a handkerchief, twisted his neck backward, and his eyes rolled back as his body went limp.
His phone fell to the ground and was kicked far away by Liang Bing. Then, a child’s cheer rang out, shouting about finding a phone.
“How little did you drink to get this drunk? I told you to drink less! Robert, this time I can’t rat you out to Mary—it’s my fault; you wanted to drink!”
Liang Bing loudly babbled as she clumsily slung the man’s shoulder, pretending to be tipsy, deliberately heading toward the flag.
When they reached the wooden door, she stumbled and, together with the man, fell headfirst through the door.
Passersby who had witnessed the swaying door were dumbfounded to see a staircase leading underground beyond it.
They exchanged looks, curiosity drawing them to push the door open. Shining their phone lights inside, they found the staircase made of solid wood, faintly illuminated within.
The walls, crafted from uneven bricks, possessed a unique delicacy. The faint orange-red glow coming from within gave the place the feel of an underground bar.
The group cheered, thinking they had found an exciting new spot, and one after another, they entered.
Meanwhile, Gao Ning, who had been waiting outside for two hours, suddenly snapped awake and sat up abruptly.
Outside, bright lights still shone. The government had set up massive searchlights, enveloping the entire town from all directions. Researchers worked day and night, employing every method to break into the town.
Unfortunately, no news had come through so far. The media was rampant with rumors. Yet, as time passed, the crowds only grew larger.
But none of that concerned Gao Ning. What startled him awake was the map showing the training camp for warriors, which now displayed “full capacity.”
Opening the details, Gao Ning was taken aback, almost laughing helplessly. “How did even you sneak in?”
