Chapter Sixty: The First Mission

When Master Sheng instructed him to find a backup for the Child of Fate in the Chosen Ruins, Wang Li could hardly believe such words could come from Sheng himself.
Master Sheng had always advocated for lying low, for keeping a low profile at all costs. Even when he said he wanted Wang Li to stir up some waves, Wang Li found it hard to believe, his mind full of confusion.
“Is this truly what you want, sir?”
“Whether you step forward or not is your own choice. I’m just watching in silence; weigh it for yourself.”
“Really?”
“Damn it, are you done nagging? You’re fussier than any woman!”
Since Master Sheng had spoken so, Wang Li felt reassured.
He said to the group, “No matter what happens to those who went out, the tasks must still be taken.”
“Luo Heng, Jiang Yu, Jin Lan, Zhou Qian—you four go and transcribe the collective tasks posted in the task district. We’ll discuss which one to accept first.”
“Yes, sir!”
The four accepted their orders and left.
Wang Li then said to the others, “Don’t worry too much about our fellow disciples’ safety, nor about the security of Vengeance City. The tasks in the district haven’t indicated any large-scale dangers. As long as you follow instructions, with thousands of us together, there shouldn’t be too great a risk.”
Everyone nodded in agreement.
Just as Wang Li had said, though none of them had high cultivation, thousands gathered together formed a formidable force, making Vengeance City relatively safe.
About the time it took to burn an incense stick later, Luo Heng and the other three returned.
Wang Li began selecting suitable tasks from among the many available.
The greatest advantage of the absence of other experts was that those remaining could choose the most suitable tasks first.
Having quickly browsed through them, Wang Li realized that, though these tasks seemed numerous and varied, they were much like those before: all centered around a single matter.
Previously, the tasks had revolved around the Direhowl Pack; this time, the main thread was a secret realm three hundred miles from Vengeance City.
Most of the group tasks involved clearing dangers outside the entrance to the secret realm; a smaller portion were individual tasks requiring exploration within. This secret realm was precisely where those who had left sensed an opportunity.
In other words, the vast majority of lower-cultivation candidates would be stopped at the entrance.
It was somewhat exasperating.
Yet Wang Li wanted to bring many people in, and he already had a plan in mind.

He asked those present if they shared the same thought, and the answer was unanimous.
Individual tasks offered rich rewards, all concentrated within the secret realm. Even a fool would know which to choose.
As for danger… if cultivators were afraid of danger, what was the point of cultivating at all?
Wang Li hadn’t made his decision in a moment of hotheadedness; he had first consulted Master Sheng.
Though Master Sheng hadn’t seemed particularly interested, he’d still helped calculate the outcome, which came out as extremely auspicious.
With this, Wang Li felt reassured.
He sought out Jiang Yue, who was chattering endlessly to her hammer and flying sword.
There was a crucial question he needed her to answer before making his move.
“If you have something to ask, hurry up. Can’t you see I’m busy?” Jiang Yue said impatiently.
Previously, the spirits of the two spirit tools would still respond to her, perhaps with a vibration, a flare of light, or an array, expressing their opinions. But after her “tireless” lectures, now… neither spirit showed any sign of life, no matter how much she talked.
So the little girl was in an extremely foul mood.
Wang Li ignored her irritation. “Can you move the Chosen List with you?”
“Hmph! None of your business!”
Her defiant attitude made people itch to give her a beating.
“Can't afford to provoke her… can't afford to provoke her…” Wang Li mentally repeated the phrase to remind himself not to stoop to her level, suppressing the urge to act. He said solemnly, “This question is important—it concerns the safety of thousands of our peers. Think carefully before you answer!”
He left her no room to refuse.
“Boo… you’re bullying me, I’m going to…” Jiang Yue was about to unleash her “ultimate weapon” when she caught sight of Wang Li’s dark expression and quickly changed her tone. “The Chosen List is with me—where I go, it goes, unless I tell it not to follow…”
“That’s all I needed to hear!” Wang Li grew excited. “We’ll take Task Sixty-Two, a fourth-tier mission: clearing the flame rat horde at the secret realm’s entrance!”
“Ah! Steward Wang, this task may not be high-level, but there are two fifth-tier tasks nearby. If we take this one directly, won’t we be surrounded by fifth-tier dangers? Isn’t that too risky?”

Luo Heng immediately voiced his objection.
It wasn’t that he disrespected Wang Li’s decision, but the idea seemed questionable.
Task Sixty-Two was right at the secret realm’s entrance, but reaching that area wouldn’t be easy; one would have to cross numerous task zones. Even assuming they could reach it safely, with two fifth-tier task zones nearby, he doubted the “old, weak, sick, and disabled” left in Vengeance City had the ability to handle such threats, or that the task zones of different tiers wouldn’t interfere with one another.
Jiang Yu added, “I’m not in favor of this choice either. There are too many disciples in the Body Tempering Realm in the city; they’d have little means of self-defense if danger arose. They can’t fly, and crossing so many task zones would cost too many lives. Even leaving them here isn’t safe—without any experts holding the fort, Vengeance City is no different from the outside.”
“Senior Brother Luo Heng and Junior Sister Jiang Yu are right. I don’t think we need to take risks on the first battle,” Jin Lan voiced his own concerns.
Wang Li shook his head and smiled. “I know what you’re worried about, but I have no intention of leaving anyone behind in Vengeance City, nor of making the low-level disciples cross the task zones themselves.”
“…”
Everyone was stunned.
Not leaving anyone in Vengeance City, not making low-level disciples cross the task zones—how did he think that would work?
Wang Li didn’t keep them guessing. He took a green jade talisman from his sleeve and tossed it to Luo Heng.
“This is the control talisman for the encampment treasure, ‘Imperial Guard Barracks.’ Once you refine it, you can freely control its size at will. The internal space remains the same, but when the time comes, everyone will enter it, and you’ll carry the barracks and fly straight there.”
“You’re a Golden Core expert; three hundred miles is just an incense stick’s journey for you. Just be careful, and there should be no problem.”
“The only inconvenience is that as long as there are people inside, you can’t store the barracks in your spatial ring or storage bracelet—you’ll have to carry it by hand. But the weight shouldn’t slow you down much.”
The others listened, dumbfounded.
So you could transport people like this?
Thinking back on the question Wang Li had asked Jiang Yue…
Was he planning to move the entire Vengeance City?
Luo Heng stammered, “Is this barracks a spatial artifact?”
Wang Li replied, “Not just any spatial artifact—it’s one of the rare few capable of carrying living beings!”
