Chapter 114: Stepping on Her Heart's Core
"If there are no questions, let us get straight to the point. Every word I say from here on is critical. Listen carefully and commit it to memory..." Yu Wensi gazed steadily at the conference room before returning his focus to the documents, turning the pages with deliberate, unhurried movements.
After a brief silence, he adjusted his posture. "The scale of this event is set to medium. I want an effect that captures the entire city and ignites a sensation. In other words, this event will dictate the fashion trends of this city, perhaps even the entire country, or the world... Of course, my ambition is currently limited to this city, but the scope depends on the ambition of everyone in this room. The more fervent your hearts, the greater the success of this event will be."
Yu Wensi revealed his grand vision. This was undoubtedly a perfect opportunity—a chance to deal a fatal blow to Luo Youcong. He had to be in total control, leaving no room for ambiguity.
"But, this..." Someone began to look uneasy. After all, dealing with an international superstar wasn't an impossible task, but creating the kind of sensation Yu Wensi described was a massive undertaking.
"If you have questions, speak up. However, I need everyone to remember that this is a medium-scale event. It doesn't need to be forced. What Yuwen Media produces is never just good; it is always the best." With that, Yu Wensi leaned back, ready to listen.
At this moment, he seemed to have shed his executive persona, yet his authority remained palpable. There was no doubt that in the business world, Yu Wensi was a formidable and charismatic man.
"Mr. President, I feel there is too much pressure on this event. With a medium-scale plan, there are limitations. How can we achieve such an effect? Causing a sensation throughout the city is only temporary." To plan a medium-scale event and expect to shake the entire city was nothing short of a joke.
To sustain such impact was the real challenge, let alone reaching the national level. The limitations were clear.
"That is exactly why I rely on all of you." Yu Wensi rose with a smile, leaning one hand on the table and pushing his chair back with the other. He paced slowly behind the people gathered on both sides of the office. "You are all elites of this company. I trust you can handle any situation with composure. Moreover... I believe in you. I believe you can make this plan flawless."
Yu Wensi finally stopped beside Lu Zizi and Wu Meili. "Wu Meili, starting today, you will be reporting the progress of this event directly to me."
He rested a hand on Wu Meili’s shoulder, patting it gently as if to offer encouragement, though it silently bestowed upon her an immense, intangible surge of motivation.
"Ah? Then what am I supposed to do? Mr. President, you aren't trying to fire me, are you? I haven't done anything wrong..." Chen Haoming protested, feeling disgruntled. He had been by Yu Wensi’s side for a long time; to be replaced so suddenly without explanation was hard to swallow.
Yu Wensi shrugged, unfazed. "If you don't want to play a more important role, I can keep you on as my assistant."
Chen Haoming froze, not quite processing the words at first. His brows knitted together. "Mr. President, are you promoting me?" His eyes lit up. Finally, his luck had turned.
Yu Wensi did not deny it, merely shaking his head with a faint, knowing smile. Seeing others covering their mouths to hide their laughter, Chen Haoming blushed beet red.
He didn't know when it started, but Yu Wensi realized his own smile could be so genuine. Perhaps it began after meeting Mai Xijun. She could see right through him, making him feel like a transparent being, or a naked child standing before her.
Thinking of this, Yu Wensi found it inexplicably amusing. Whenever he recalled Mai Xijun responding to his provocations with that wicked glint in her eyes, he couldn't help but smile. When did his laughter become something from the depths of his heart? It was no longer just a mask; it was a serene, natural expression, stripped of hidden agendas or calculated motives.
In his world, if something lacked utility, he wouldn't even glance at it. Perhaps the people or things that once made him hide daggers behind his smiles were simply those that hadn't yet lost their value. But now, things had changed.
"I..." Wu Meili stammered, biting her lip and bowing her head, her voice so faint it was as if she had never spoken at all.
"Keep other matters for after the meeting... Does anyone else have any opinions or thoughts? Please, speak up." Yu Wensi’s tone shifted from gentle—directed at Wu Meili—to authoritative and impassioned.
Those present began to raise their hands. This was a major project, and everyone had a responsibility. The president trusted them, and they had to show their worth. As the leaders of the company, they treated this like a summit, keeping their focus razor-sharp.
If the progress of this medium-scale event proved as effective as Yu Wensi anticipated, it would become the greatest honor for everyone in the room—an honor that would last a lifetime.
***
The meeting concluded around noon. It had been led by Yu Wensi since the early morning, with only a short break. The entire group had spent the morning in the conference room.
Of course, this was only the beginning; there was much more to do in the afternoon.
Yu Wensi declared the meeting over, unbuttoning his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves as he walked. He had an appointment with Mai Xijun; he wanted her help designing a themed ring buckle, and that task needed to be prioritized.
Despite his usual composure, he was in a hurry. As soon as he stepped out of the elevator, he couldn't wait to drive to Mai Xijun’s home to share his idea. She would surely praise his cleverness. He felt a warm glow inside.
"Hey, handsome... oh, wait, A-Si."
*A-Si?* Yu Wensi frowned. What kind of name was that?
He didn't stop, continuing his stride, but after only one step, he came to a rigid halt.
*Handsome... A-Si...*
*Meili's mom... Auntie...*
*A-Si... Yu Wensi...*
Damn it. For the first time, as an observer, he realized how awkward his own name sounded.
"Auntie, you're here..." Waiting for Meili? Yu Wensi looked at Meili’s mother with disbelief. The expression clearly meant, "Why are you calling me 'A-Si' while waiting for Wu Meili?"
"Forgot to tell you. My daughter, she works at your company. Hehe. I'm waiting for her to get off work so we can eat together." She looked at him with admiration; he really did look like a grand executive in that crisp suit.
"Oh..." Yu Wensi smiled, nodding slightly. "Auntie, you can wait here for a moment. It's already time to clock out; she should be down soon."
"That’s right. A-Si, would you like to join us for a meal?" Auntie eagerly invited him, blushing slightly as if she were a shy bride-to-be meeting her in-laws, though the situation was clearly reversed.
"I’m afraid not. I have something else to take care of," Yu Wensi declined politely.
Just then, the elevator chimed and the doors opened. As if by reflex, Yu Wensi turned back before leaving.
"Meili, you're off work! Come, let me introduce you. This is my friend, A-Si." Meili’s mom grabbed Wu Meili’s arm and dragged her toward Yu Wensi. The people who had just exited the elevator stared in disbelief, while those still inside looked on with disdain—until they realized the man their mother called "A-Si" was none other than their CEO, Yu Wensi. They froze instantly.
Meili was mortified, her face burning with embarrassment. She tugged at her mother’s clothes, but her mother remained undeterred, playing out her one-woman show to the fullest.
"A-Si, this is my daughter, Wu Meili." Auntie smiled as if they were old friends who had known each other for years.
Yu Wensi didn't speak, instead observing Wu Meili with a playful gaze. She matched the white magnolia—fresh, moving, and proud, yet not vulgar.
"Hello, Assistant Wu," Yu Wensi said. He had not forgotten that he had just promoted her from the editing department to his assistant.
Wu Meili felt incredibly awkward, wishing she could just run away, but her hand was gripped tightly by her mother.
"Auntie, Assistant Wu, where are you planning to go? I can give you a lift." Yu Wensi was elegant and gentlemanly, but the way he looked at Wu Meili felt as though he were dancing on the very strings of her heart.
