Chapter Sixty-One: Ambush
Returning to her residence, Liu Xin’s mind was a tangled mess. She recalled the days when everyone trained together, lived together, completed tasks side by side, and cared for each other like a family. Thus, Liu Xin spent the entire night lost in memories.
At dawn, Yao Ye knocked on the door to Liu Xin’s courtyard. Liu Xin drew a deep breath, composed herself, left a letter on the table, and stepped out into the morning.
Seeing Yao Ye’s spirited, lively demeanor, Liu Xin’s heart ached painfully. Forcing a smile, she greeted him.
“Let’s go! It’s getting late. The sooner we set off, the sooner we’ll be back!”
Yao Ye looked at his senior sister, reading a trace of sorrow beneath her exhaustion. He assumed she was worried about the task ahead.
“Don’t worry, sister! I’ll be with you today. Whatever problems come up, they’re nothing to me! Trust me, I’ve got everything covered!”
Watching Yao Ye thump his chest in assurance, Liu Xin let out a gentle laugh.
“That’s more like it! Sister, you should smile more; always frowning like that makes everyone worry for you!”
At his words, Liu Xin’s smile faded. She closed the courtyard gate and began heading toward the academy entrance.
Yao Ye hurried after her. “Wait for me, sister!”
In the shadows, a figure watched them leave. With a sinister grin, he quickly vanished into the academy grounds.
The shadow who had been surveilling Yao Ye soon arrived at a secluded courtyard. As the figure descended from the sky, a powerful demon who had been in contact with Liu Xin rushed out from the house.
“Who are you? What business do you have here?”
“You must be Elder Xiong of the Bear Clan, Xiong Xiao!”
Xiong Xiao, of the demon clan, retreated a step, assuming a defensive stance, warily eyeing the newcomer.
“No need for alarm, Elder Xiong. I am Chen Feng, a teacher at Divine Wind Academy. I come bearing good news.”
Xiong Xiao shot Chen Feng a look of contempt. “You claim to be a teacher at Divine Wind Academy; why should I believe you?”
Chen Feng let out a hearty laugh. “Elder Xiong, see for yourself.”
At the sound, Xiong Xiao glanced over and saw the demonic restriction within Chen Feng’s body. He immediately relaxed.
“Now you may rest assured, Elder Xiong.”
At his words, Xiong Xiao quickly clasped his hands in apology. “My apologies, Teacher Chen, I misunderstood you.”
Chen Feng waved off the apology. “We are all just following orders. I came to inform you: Liu Xin has taken Yao Ye out of the academy just as you instructed. You should prepare yourself.”
“Hmph! Yao Ye, you were lucky last time! Let’s see who can save you now! Thank you for the news, Teacher Chen!”
“That’s enough. I wish you success. Now, I’ll take my leave.”
With that, Chen Feng flew back toward the academy. As he reached the entrance, a figure blocked his path.
“Teacher Chen! Out so early—where have you been?”
Chen Feng looked flustered. “Good morning, Vice Dean! I was just out for a walk, nothing more, heh.”
Tang Ze eyed Chen Feng skeptically. “Just a walk? That’s not what I’ve heard. Some say you’ve been meeting with someone. Speak! Who were you meeting?”
Realizing his actions had been exposed, Chen Feng straightened his back.
“Hmph, Tang Ze, since you’ve found me out, I might as well tell you! If you let me go now, perhaps you can still save Yao Ye’s life. Otherwise... well, prepare to collect his corpse!”
Tang Ze sneered. “Did you really think I didn’t know the demons have infiltrated? I’ll take you down first!”
Knowing he was no match for Tang Ze, Chen Feng turned to flee.
“Trying to run now? You really underestimate me, Tang Ze!” With just a few moves, Tang Ze subdued the escaping Chen Feng.
Severely injured, Chen Feng’s face went ashen and he could only submit to capture.
“Enforcement Squad! Detain Chen Feng for now. I’ll deal with him when I return!” Tang Ze’s heart was filled with concern for Yao Ye’s safety, and he shot into the sky at full speed.
“Yao Ye, you must stay safe!” Tang Ze grew more anxious by the second.
Meanwhile, Yao Ye and Liu Xin had stopped in the woods outside the city. Yao Ye looked at Liu Xin in confusion.
“Sister, can you tell me what’s going on now? You’ve been so distracted on the way here. I ask you what’s wrong, but you won’t say.”
Tears streamed down Liu Xin’s face as she gazed at Yao Ye, full of guilt.
“What’s wrong, sister? Did I do something to upset you? I’m sorry, I—”
Liu Xin stepped forward and gently covered Yao Ye’s mouth, shaking her head as tears fell.
“No, Yao Ye! I am the one who should apologize. I only hope you can one day understand my reasons.”
Yao Ye grew even more confused. “Sister, what is happening? Can’t you just tell me clearly?”
A harsh laugh rang out from the distance. “Yao Ye, if you want to know, let me enlighten you!”
Hearing the voice, Yao Ye turned to look.
“It’s you! From the Bear Clan! You took part in the massacre of my Heavenly Demon Wolf Clan!” Yao Ye stared with clenched teeth at the figure slowly approaching.
It was Xiong Xiao. “Last time, you little beast, you managed to escape. Let’s see who will save you now!”
