Chen Yu let out a soft little cry, her heart fluttering wildly. When they reached the bedroom door, she lowered her head shyly and murmured, “It’s my first time, so go easy on me.”

Ye Fei was completely baffled. What on earth was this young lady talking about?

“No, sis, why are you following me? Go back to your room and sleep. We still have something to do tonight.”

What an utterly clueless man!

Chen Yu froze. She had thought he had finally caught on, but it turned out he had not meant that they should sleep together at all. He meant that they should each return to their own rooms to sleep!

She shot Ye Fei an exasperated look, then turned and went back to her room.

Ye Fei was utterly perplexed. This young lady was always saying things he could not make head or tail of. Perhaps she was not quite right in the head either.

He did not let it bother him. He went back to his room and slept until ten that night.

Chen Yu checked the time, woke Ye Fei, and the two of them headed to the Xue residence together.

There were quite a few prominent families in Southern China. The Ye family led the pack, and the only family capable of standing against them was the Xue family. However, he had recently heard that the old master of the Xue family was in poor health and always looked frail and sickly, so Ye Fei decided to pay him a visit first.

The two of them were stopped without question by the guards at the entrance to the Xue residence.

“This is the Xue family residence. Do you think just any stray cat or dog can come in? Have you even considered who you are?”

Ye Fei immediately lost his temper. Pointing at the guard, he said, “And who are you? Aren’t you merely standing guard at the gate? Don’t tell me you actually think you’re a member of the Xue family.”

The guard snorted coldly. “Even if I’m only standing guard, I’m standing guard at the Xue family’s gate. What are you supposed to be? You come here to pay a visit in the middle of the night and actually think you’re the president or something, with everyone obligated to welcome you?”

Ye Fei had been turned away before, but this particular rejection was especially infuriating. He composed himself and said slowly, “I’m a miracle doctor. I can cure the old master’s illness.”

“Hah! Of all the people pretending to be miracle doctors, you’re probably the least convincing. At least the other charlatans know who’s sick. You, on the other hand, just made someone up on the spot.”

The guard’s words left the visitors completely at a loss. The situation had become rather awkward.

Chen Yu stepped forward and said, “Hello, big brother. My name is Chen Yu, and I’m from the Chen family of Hangzhou. Could we meet Chairman Xue?”

The Xue family was extremely low-profile, so outsiders did not even know that, besides their chairman, there were other members of the family.

Ye Fei had merely followed the guard’s assumption, figuring that the family must have an elderly man who was ill. But who would have thought it was not an old man at all? Who else could it be? Surely not the chairman himself?

The guard licked his lips when he saw Chen Yu’s attractive features and striking figure. “Let me touch you, and I’ll consider whether to let you in.”

…

This was truly a case of one person rising to power and everyone around him benefiting. Even the guard at the Xue family’s gate knew how to demand a favor.

Ye Fei stepped forward. “Fine. You can touch me instead. Touch me wherever you like. However you like.”

The guard shoved Ye Fei aside impatiently. “Who the hell wants to touch you? Do you have a figure as good as this young lady’s? You look like a dried corpse. Disgusting!”

Just as the two sides reached an impasse, a voice came from inside the courtyard.

“Who’s at the gate? What are you talking about? It’s so late. You’ll disturb the others.”

The guard hurriedly changed his expression and replied cheerfully, “Second Young Master, I’m just talking to myself. There’s no one here.”

…

What a shameless guard—he was lying through his teeth with his eyes wide open!

Ye Fei suddenly shouted, “Help! The guard is killing someone!”

The guard was startled and rushed over to cover Ye Fei’s mouth, but in the next instant, Ye Fei twisted his arm behind his back and pinned him against the wall.

At last, the gate opened. A young man emerged from within, only to be badly startled by the scene before him. He retreated several steps in succession.

Ye Fei released the guard and smiled. “Sorry to trouble you. We wanted to…” He noticed the young man swaying unsteadily and hurried forward to support him. “Are you all right? Don’t faint. It took me a great deal of effort to trick you into coming outside.”

The man coughed softly and raised his eyes. “Who are you? Why have you broken into the Xue residence in the middle of the night? What are you after?”

Chen Yu smiled. “We do have a purpose, but it’s a benevolent one. Could you let us in first? This guard has already kept us waiting for quite some time.”

The young man glanced at the guard, his expression full of exasperation.

“I’ve told you countless times that when guests come to visit, you should invite them inside. Why do you always put on such an intimidating display? Do you really not want to keep your job?”

The guard’s eyes suddenly filled with tears. Sniffling pitifully, he said, “Young Master, I was only thinking of the family’s future. What if they were thieves?”

Good grief—what kind of performance was this guard putting on?

Ye Fei was stunned. Chen Yu, standing beside him, was equally shocked. The man had real talent. It was a crime for him to be working as a guard instead of acting.

At last, the two of them were invited inside by the Xue family’s young master. The courtyard was spacious. After they followed a short path lined with lamps, a luxurious modern villa appeared before them.

“Hello.”

The moment Chen Yu saw an elderly man, she greeted him politely.

The old man looked healthy and full of color, without the slightest sign of illness. Could it really not be him? Then who was sick?

Ye Fei looked around carefully. No one in the living room appeared to be suffering from any supposedly incurable disease.

They could not afford to waste any more time, so Ye Fei stepped forward and asked, “May I ask which one of you is ill? Could you please come out and let me have a look?”

Chen Yu had intended to make some small talk and ease the awkward atmosphere, but the moment Ye Fei spoke, the atmosphere became awkward beyond words.

…

After a long silence, the old man sitting on the sofa said slowly, “Young miracle doctor, which school or lineage do you come from? From the way you speak, it sounds as though you believe you can cure my granddaughter’s illness.”

Ye Fei suddenly understood. So the patient was a granddaughter. He had assumed it was the old man, which explained why the guard had been so determined not to let them in.

“I learned everything on my own. As for my master, he came and went without a trace and never stayed in one place, so I’d rather not mention his name.”

The old man’s eyes revealed his disbelief. He scrutinized Ye Fei carefully before saying, “Why not tell me anyway? I know quite a few renowned physicians. Perhaps your master is one of them.”

It seemed there was no getting out of it now.

Ye Fei lowered his eyes slightly, sighed in a low voice, and gave a bitter smile. “My master has passed away. Before he died, he forbade me from mentioning his name in front of others.”

A middle-aged man sitting beside the old man snorted coldly and rose to his feet.

“Young man, that’s quite an excuse. You certainly have a way with words. Tell us, what illnesses have you actually cured?”

This middle-aged man was Xue Bengui, the person who managed the Xue family. He was an exceptionally shrewd businessman, yet also a mild and courteous man. To prevent outsiders from currying favor with the family, he had never spoken to outsiders about his relatives.
