Chapter 43: Good and Evil

Mu Estate.
Mu Wenfeng came to the garden and saw Mu Qingnan sitting there quietly. He raised his feet and walked over.
“Qingnan, is something troubling you?” Mu Wenfeng asked, his eyes fixed on him.
“Father, there is something I do not quite understand.” Mu Qingnan looked at his father, confusion filling his eyes. “My elder brother and I clearly found the man who killed Huang Zaoze, yet I feel no desire to hold him accountable. Instead, I even feel some sympathy for him.”
Mu Qingnan repeated to Mu Wenfeng what the man had said that day.
Ever since returning, he had been pondering the matter, but he still could not determine who was right and who was wrong. As the future heir of the Mu family, he certainly had a responsibility to pursue the man’s crime.
Yet from the man’s point of view, he had done nothing wrong either. His elder sister had been killed by Huang Zaoze, and taking revenge for her was only natural—especially in a world where the strong preyed upon the weak.
“Qingnan, what he described truly happens often. It is not limited to the Mu family’s affiliated clans; such things occur throughout the world every moment of every day. No matter how powerful we are, we cannot manage everything. Human desire is limitless, after all.” Mu Wenfeng patted his son on the shoulder.
“I do not know whether we are right or wrong. He was merely avenging his sister, yet we intend to hunt him down. Father, what should we do?” Mu Qingnan’s expression was complicated. It felt as though an enormous stone weighed upon his heart, leaving him oppressed and miserable.
Mu Wenfeng gazed toward the distant sky and said earnestly, “Qingnan, this world has no true right or wrong. There is only good and evil. Of the two sides, which do you think is evil, and which is good?”
Mu Wenfeng patiently guided his son. Mu Qingnan had little experience and could easily become lost in the complexities of human affairs. He needed to enlighten him gradually and lead him out of that whirlpool.
“Good and evil?” Mu Qingnan murmured. Then his eyes lit up, as though he had understood something. “Father, I know now.”
The fault had clearly lain with Huang Zaoze. A man who already had a family yet forcibly seized what belonged to others was evil.
After hearing Mu Wenfeng’s words, Mu Qingnan understood much more, and the fog in his heart dispersed.
“It is good that you understand. Although we cannot govern the entire world, we can still control our affiliated clans. Qingnan, cultivate diligently. In the future, you will inspect those affiliated clans.” Seeing that the complexity had finally vanished from his son’s eyes, Mu Wenfeng felt delighted as well. Qingnan was finally growing up, little by little.

Outside the Li family estate, Su Dongli waited for roughly half an hour before finally seeing a somewhat portly middle-aged man emerge.

Whoosh!
His figure suddenly shot forward. A blur flashed past, and the middle-aged man before the Li family residence vanished without a trace. The entire scene happened so quickly that even the Li family guards failed to react.
Li Chun had been walking along when he suddenly felt his body grow light and his vision blur. In the next instant, he was already standing atop the roof of a nearby tavern.
“Where... where is this?” Li Chun looked around in panic, utterly at a loss.
“Li Chun.”
A stern voice came from behind him. Startled, he hurriedly turned around.
When Li Chun saw that it was Su Dongli, he was first shocked, then respectfully said, “M-Master Su, if you wished to see me, you only had to send word. This place is awfully high. Why don’t we go downstairs and talk?”
“I will ask you only one question. What did you take the fifty thousand taels for a few days ago?” Su Dongli fixed him with a sharp gaze.
“This...” Faced with Su Dongli’s question, Li Chun did not know how to answer.
Seeing that the other man still refused to speak, Su Dongli gradually grew impatient. He stepped in front of Li Chun and struck out with one palm.
Li Chun’s body immediately tipped backward and fell.
He stared at the ground below, terror filling his eyes. Although he practiced martial arts, he possessed no particularly refined movement technique. If he fell from here, he would surely be smashed into a pool of blood.
“Master Su, I’ll tell you! I’ll tell you!” Li Chun cried out hurriedly.
Su Dongli swiftly seized his body, stopping him on the edge of the roof.
“I took that money to lend to Mo Wuhai. He promised to forge several divine weapons for me. As for what he intended to do with them, I truly had nothing to do with it, Master Su!” Li Chun spoke anxiously, cold sweat streaming down his face.
Having obtained the information he needed, Su Dongli pulled Li Chun up. A moment later, his figure blurred, and he reappeared before the Li family estate.
The Li family guards were still wondering where their master had gone when they suddenly saw him appear before them again. They immediately began praising him.
“The master’s martial arts are truly formidable!”
“Formidable my ass. All of you, get lost!” After Su Dongli’s interference, Li Chun was already in a foul mood. Hearing the guards say such things caused the anger in his heart to erupt at once.

After leaving the Li family estate, Su Dongli headed for the Forging Pavilion.
Mo Wuhai could not possibly have gathered so much silver for no reason. He must have had some ulterior motive.
When Su Dongli reached the entrance of the Forging Pavilion, he found the main doors tightly shut. His suspicions deepened. With a flash of his figure, he leaped onto the roof.
He slowly made his way inward and discovered faint voices coming from the room below.
“Master, the Ghost Gate Pass operation has failed,” Little Wu said.
At those words, Mo Wuhai’s face twitched violently. He kicked over the table before him.
“The people from Ghost Gate Pass are all a bunch of useless fools! They swallowed a hundred thousand taels from me, yet they could not even kill a mere Mu Qingnan!”
“Master, we should leave quickly. If the Mu family traces this back to us, we are finished.” The attendant nearby was visibly frightened. He was deeply afraid of the Mu family.
Mo Wuhai gradually calmed himself. Only then did he gather a few essential belongings and leave through the back door with Little Wu.
“Mo Wuhai, you have some nerve. The master saw your talent in forging and saved your life, yet I never expected you to be such an ungrateful, treacherous wretch.” Hidden in the darkness, Su Dongli clenched his fists.
He knew very well why Mu Wenfeng had saved Mo Wuhai in the first place: he had taken a liking to Mo Wuhai’s talent in forging.
Mu Wenfeng had always intended to train him into a master smith like Copperbeard, so that he could one day serve the Mu family. Yet now, Mo Wuhai had attempted to assassinate his son.
Fury burned in Su Dongli’s eyes as he silently followed the two men. The moment they left the city would be the moment of their deaths.
The reason he did not want to act within the city was that, after killing them, he would still have to dispose of their bodies. If outsiders saw that the Mu family’s steward had killed Mo Wuhai, they would inevitably grow fearful and uneasy.
Although Windflower City belonged to the Mu family, if the Mu family began killing people for no reason, who could say when they might become the next targets?
