With Tan Wei standing as guarantor, Su Ming quickly pacified the shopkeepers, though his frown deepened with an unshakable sense that an invisible hand was pulling the strings behind the scenes.

The sudden troubles stirred up by Pang Sandao and the unexpected visit from Yan Yu felt too coincidental to be mere chance.

As they left, Pang Sandao's men left a clear message: “Make it clear to your boss Su that this matter ends here. Forget about Chen Dao—that’s wiped clean—or else Master Qi won’t let him off.”

Their meaning was unmistakable. If Su Ming just backed down, it would save face for Qi Wei, and serve as a public explanation that he was not ungrateful. The matter would be considered closed.

Yet Su Ming found himself trapped in a dilemma.

If he let it go, the recently stabilized financial routes would be immediately destroyed. After March, with his arms crippled, even Master Hu San would not protect him. By then, the shopkeepers might turn against him too.

Without the system’s mission weighing on him, Su Ming might have bowed his head and yielded. After all, the other party was a major leader of the Hehai Gang, and this was no disgrace. Besides, reputation was of little importance to him.

But now, he could not simply let it go.

If he sought revenge to give the shopkeepers an explanation, it meant confronting Qi Wei directly behind Pang Sandao’s back. At that point, he would lose control.

While still pondering, Liu Lecheng threw a middle-aged man dressed like a scholar to the ground and snarled, “Boss, Pang Sandao came to our Zhanhua Street because he was chasing a debt!”

Su Ming lifted his eyes to see the man in a plain robe and square scarf, trembling and wailing pitifully.

“Lords, lords, I’m wronged! I only owe Lord Pang two taels of silver. I promised to repay soon, but today, for some reason, he insisted on capturing me and giving me a beating.”

“I was frightened and ran blindly to Zhanhua Street. I did not mean to bring trouble to you all.”

The scholar’s body shook as he spoke, clearly terrified by Liu Lecheng and Su Ming’s imposing presence.

Su Ming frowned, sensing something odd about this man, though he couldn’t put his finger on it.

“Who are you?”

“My name is Fang Lianyun, a poor scholar from Zilin Slope. My family is impoverished, so I had no choice but to borrow two taels from Lord Pang. I didn’t expect that after repaying two taels, I still owed two more—how could I ever pay it off? Today, by chance, I ran into Lord Pang on the street. He insisted on taking it out on me, so I had to run.”

Fang Lianyun spoke honestly, cautiously watching their expressions, clearly wary.

Though the Southern Merchants’ Three Regions had fifty-eight bureaus, and the Great Merchant Restoration was only twenty-four years old, all of Southern Divine Continent had been wracked by war before. Many could barely afford food, and where there was money to be had, there were always lenders.

One of Pang Sandao’s businesses on Zilin Slope was precisely this lending.

“But on the way chasing me, I overheard Lord Pang say he wanted to use this chance to crush Su Ming’s prestige and vent for Master Qi, so the shopkeepers on Zhanhua Street wouldn’t be contacted in vain.”

“But I don’t know who this Master Su is, nor who Master Qi is…”

“That’s all I know. Please, lords, spare me—I’m truly innocent.”

Fang Lianyun finished with deep bows, pounding the floor loudly.

Su Ming’s eyes narrowed sharply, a chilling light flashing within. He grabbed Fang Lianyun by the collar.

“What did you say? Shopkeepers? Which shopkeepers?”

Fang Lianyun trembled and stammered, “I don’t know, I only heard that one sentence.”

Su Ming flung him to the ground and ordered Liu Lecheng, “Go check. Find out which shopkeepers have moved to Zilin Slope after this.”

Liu Lecheng sensed the gravity and quickly dispatched men to investigate.

Cut off the root!

Suddenly, Su Ming realized what a cunning two-birds-one-stone scheme this was.

Qi Wei’s feigned intervention was for appearances, but Pang Sandao had his own designs.

Using Master Qi’s name as a scarecrow, he frightened Su Ming into inaction, then greedily lured all the shopkeepers from Zhanhua Street to Zilin Slope with promises of huge profits.

With the excuse of the recent vandalism, those shopkeepers could now legitimately relocate, continuing their operations under this new model without sharing profits.

And Su Ming could not stop them forcibly. If he tried, the news would leak, and who would dare do business on Zhanhua Street again?

This was about to expose all of Su Ming’s weaknesses. Without money, everything would collapse. His brothers would scatter within three days, and he would be left alone, powerless and meaningless.

“Good! Good! Good!” Su Ming uttered three times in succession, his murderous intent almost solidifying into form. Anyone nearby could feel the icy aura radiating from him.

If they wouldn’t let him live, then no one would live!

He kicked the scholar outside and ordered, “Gather everyone. Choose an auspicious day and send Pang Sandao on his way! Take Zilin Slope in one fell swoop.”

Liu Lecheng’s face was full of worry. “Boss Su, what about Master Qi?”

“I don’t care about Qi Wei now. If this continues, in half a month Zhanhua Street will be completely taken over. Whether it’s Master Hu San or Master Qi, we will have no bargaining chips left!”

“Yes.”

...

Night deepened, and the sky began to darken.

On the densely packed streets, only the brothels and gambling dens glimmered faintly by candlelight. All other shops were shuttered, occasionally pierced by dog barks, like loyal guardians bringing some peace to the sleeping city.

At some point, heavy rain began to fall from the vast sky.

Along the streets, a group of figures in black hurried by, splashing the puddles on the cobblestones. Under the dim moonlight, they carried long blades that gleamed with a cold light.

Inside the largest brothel on Zilin Slope, Pang Sandao, a towering and imposing man, sat in the main seat, arms draped around companions. He cradled a jar of exquisite peach blossom wine, his face flushed with drink. In front of him was a long table carried over from the gambling den, piled high with gold and silver—a truly splendid sight.

“I bet one hundred taels, big!”

“Come on, open it!”

Pang Sandao slammed a hundred taels of silver onto the table, making it tremble. His underlings quickly matched the bet.

“Following the boss means good food and drink. I’ll put down tenI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
